Active Matter Weapons Guide: How to Test a New Gun

Published September 14, 2026 · 7 min read

There may be a “best gun” conversation around every Active Matter update, but a permanent ranking is a poor starting point for a new player. The official game is built around raids, loot, and PvP in unstable zones; a weapon must be judged by the complete run, not one damage number.

Use the method below whenever you unlock, buy, or revisit a weapon. It gives you a useful answer without pretending that a launch-week ranking will survive the next balance pass.

Test the weapon in four situations

Do not compare weapons only in a quiet practice area. Run the same weapon through four situations:

1. Opening control: can you land consistent hits while moving from spawn? 2. Objective pressure: can you finish the chosen interaction with enough ammunition left? 3. Close contact: can you respond when an enemy appears at short range? 4. Extraction: can you travel home with the weapon’s remaining ammunition and your recovery supplies intact?

If a weapon fails one situation, record why. The problem may be recoil, reload timing, range, ammunition economy, or the route you chose. Avoid changing three variables at once.

Five measurements that matter

You do not need a spreadsheet with hidden precision. Use five simple observations:

  • Control: how many shots are predictable during a short burst?
  • Recovery: can you reload or reset from cover without losing the route?
  • Economy: how much ammunition does one objective usually consume?
  • Range: how often are you forced into a fight outside the weapon’s comfort zone?
  • Pressure: can you keep using it when a second threat appears?

Write a one-line result after every test: “Good control, weak at long range, objective completed with half a reserve.” That is enough to compare two weapons honestly.

Pair the weapon with the route

A weapon does not exist alone. A narrow route with frequent cover rewards different behavior from an open route with long sightlines. If you change the route while comparing weapons, label the result as a route test instead of a weapon test.

Choose one route and keep the objective constant for two runs. Bring the same armor and healing budget. If the weapon is new, accept that the first run is partly an interface-learning run; judge it after the second attempt.

Ammunition discipline

A weapon that feels powerful can still be expensive to use. Count shots before and after the objective. If a gun consumes the ammunition needed to extract safely, reduce optional fights or use a different baseline.

Reload during a safe reset. Do not reload simply because the magazine is not full if contact is likely and your current magazine can finish the next action. Conversely, do not enter a new area with an almost-empty magazine because you were chasing one more item.

How to compare two weapons

Use a small table instead of a tier list:

MeasureWeapon AWeapon B
Opening controlconsistent / mixed / poorconsistent / mixed / poor
Objective ammunitionlow / medium / highlow / medium / high
Close contactcomfortable / riskycomfortable / risky
Extraction reservehealthy / thinhealthy / thin
Best routecover-heavy / open / mixedcover-heavy / open / mixed

Pick the weapon that makes your next decision easier. If both are close, choose the one you can replace more easily until the live meta is clearer.

Do not publish unverified numbers

Patch notes, the weapon screen, and your own runs are different evidence. A developer change can confirm that a weapon was adjusted, but it does not prove the new ranking in every raid. A community test can reveal a pattern, but its result may depend on build, armor, range, or target.

When you share a recommendation, include the build number and test conditions. Avoid claims such as “always best” unless the official game data supports them and the statement remains true across the routes that players actually use.

Source boundary

The game mode and launch context are from the official Steam listing and official Active Matter news. The comparison method is editorial; weapon values and rankings should be updated from the live build.
