Active Matter Beginner Guide: Your First Raid and Extraction

Published September 14, 2026 · 8 min read

Active Matter is an extraction shooter built around a simple tension: enter a dangerous raid, complete enough work to make the trip worthwhile, and leave with what you can safely carry. The official store description also highlights two sides of the game — raids for loot and PvP battles in a fractured multiverse — so a good first session should teach both the route and the risk.

This is a launch-day checklist, not a permanent meta. The Steam release is scheduled for September 15, 2026, and the developers are still tuning the game. Use the steps below to create a repeatable baseline, then adjust it when the live build changes.

Before you queue

Your first goal is not a full inventory. It is one clean extraction that teaches you where the raid starts, where objectives appear, where healing is used, and how the exit works.

  • Read the mode description before loading in. If a mode is designed for a quieter or isolated run, use it to learn the interface and route.
  • Take a primary weapon you can control, enough matching ammunition for one objective, one healing option, and armor that you can afford to lose.
  • Leave room for loot. A full backpack at spawn turns every useful item into a painful decision.
  • Pick one objective you can explain in a sentence. Do not enter with five competing plans.

If you are playing with friends, agree on the exit plan before the first fight. A squad that knows when to leave survives more often than a squad that only knows how to push.

The first five minutes

Move slowly enough to learn the soundscape and the shape of the area. Check doors, cover, sightlines, and likely return routes. Do not spend your first minutes chasing every container. The early information is worth more than one extra low-value pickup.

When you find an objective, read it completely before interacting. Ask three questions:

1. What must be done here? 2. What can interrupt the action? 3. Where is the nearest route away if another squad appears?

Complete the objective only when you have a retreat route. If the interaction places you in the open, clear the immediate area first and tell teammates which direction they should cover.

Fight only for a reason

Active Matter includes PvP pressure, but not every visible enemy is a required target. Fire when the fight protects an objective, opens a route, or creates a safe extraction window. Avoid long fights in a location you cannot hold.

After a fight, use a short reset:

  • Check health and armor.
  • Count remaining ammunition.
  • Reload before moving, but do not empty magazines into a quiet room.
  • Decide whether the objective is complete enough to extract.

This reset prevents the common beginner mistake of winning a fight and immediately losing the raid to the next one while damaged and distracted.

When to extract

Extract as soon as the run has paid for its risk. That may mean the main objective is complete, your bag contains a valuable item, or your squad has lost the resources needed for another fight. Extraction is not a consolation prize; it is how progress becomes usable.

Leave earlier when:

  • healing or ammunition is running low;
  • armor is heavily damaged;
  • a teammate is separated from the group;
  • you no longer know the route to the exit;
  • the squad is carrying more than it can replace.

If you are unsure, stop adding risk. Mark the route, regroup, and move with a clear order: scout, cover, carrier, then rear guard. The exact roles can change, but the order gives everyone a job.

What to learn in the first three raids

Use three raids to answer three different questions instead of trying to master the entire game at once.

Raid one: navigation. Learn the spawn, one objective location, one fallback position, and one extraction route.

Raid two: economy. Compare what you spend on the kit with what you bring out. Notice which items are worth carrying and which only fill space.

Raid three: pressure. Test whether you can complete an objective after contact with enemies. If the answer is no, the problem may be positioning or the route rather than your weapon.

Keep a short note after each run. Record the build version, mode, objective, extraction result, and one mistake. This is more useful than copying a weapon ranking from an older patch.
